    Things to do and Visit in Ireland ( North and South)

    Dear Reader,

    I have been receiving a few leaflets from both the Northern Irish Tourist Board and the Irish Tourist Board with information on things to do, special offers and even a competitions to win a Holiday Break( yeah!)
    One of the events that caught my eye are the anual bog snorkling competitions in Northern Ireland,
    The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) will once again be hosting the annual International Bog Day event at Peatlands Park, near Dungannon to celebrate the importance and beauty of bogs. The day also includes the Northern Ireland Bog Snorkelling Championships which attracts competitors from all over Ireland.

    Competitors have to swim 2 lengths of a 60-yard bog drain with the aid of a snorkel, mask and flippers and without using any conventional swimming strokes.     There is lot’s to do,  things to visit, shops to visit, Museum to see, Beaches, or just chilling out..

    I has heard something about free travel for over the 66 year olds, and after searching the Southern Irish Tourist board for a while, I found the information :

    Once you have the Free travel pass, there are other attractions you can go to/visit that are free too, so don’t delay, get that pass today!

    Today is Friday, and The Oxegen Festival is just around the corner..

    Though we have had some beautiful weather and one was starting to think it was going to be sunscreen and sunhats this year, unless the weather magically changes, it looks like we’re back to all too familiar wellies and raingear.
    So what is this Festival all about?
    Ireland’s Oxegen Festival is always one of the can’t-be-beat best concerts in Northern Europe, and 2010’s lineup isn’t set yet, but you can bet it’ll be set to sizzle Dublin with over 100 acts and 80,000 rockers at this sells-out-fast event featuring confirmed concerts from Jay Z, Muze, Black Eyed Peas, Eminem, Kasabian, Florence and the Machine, Stereophonics, Paolo Nutini and Faithless. Last year’s lineup included Bloc Party, Elbow, Razorlight, Kings of Leon, TV on the Radio (love ’em), Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Manic Street Preachers, oldies but greaties like Jane’s Addiction, Nine Inch Nails and the Pet Shop Boys (the latter two were also at other European concerts last summer, and you’ll see similar duplication this year) and there will be, as they say, so much more.

    Oxegen Festival Camping and Dates
    The Oxegen Festival is July 9-11 in 2010. Overnight camping at Punchestown Racecourse, Naas, County Kildare for those doing the entire weekend of the Oxegen Festival (and everyone does) opens at noon on Thursday, July 8, and closes at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, July 12. Oxegen Festival ticket prices haven’t changed since 2008 and are €224.50 total for three days of music *and* overnight camping (yes, camping is included). For €20 more, buy a four-day ticket to start the music festival fun on Thursday and camp that night, too.

    Birth rate at near 30-year high

    A total of 19,289 babies were born during the third quarter of 2009, the highest number registered in the State in almost 30 years.

    According to new figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), the number of babies born rose by 1.8 per cent compared to the preceding year and was close to that recorded in the second quarter of 1980 when 19,339 births were registered in Ireland.

    As many as 42.6 per cent of all births recorded were to first-time mothers. The average age of mothers giving birth was 31.2 years,

    Births in the third quarter of last year represented an annual birth rate of 17.3 per 1,000 population, compared to 17.2 per 1,000 in the same quarter a year earlier and just 14.7 per 1,000 population in the same three-month period in 2000.

    Fingal in Dublin recorded the highest birth rate of 23 per 1,000 for July through to September while County Monaghan recorded the lowest birth rate of 12.6 per 1,000 population.

    Of the 19,289 babies born in the third quarter, 6,256 were registered as being births outside of marriage. This is equivalent to 32.4 per cent of all babies.

    Approximately 17.4 per cent of all births were to unmarried parents with the same address

    The highest number of births outside marriage occurred in Cork city while the lowest percentage was in County Leitrim.

    The latest data records a decline in the number of marriages taking place with 8,050 marriages registered in the third quarter, down 715 for the same three-month period in 2008. However, it marks an increase of 457 from the number of marriages registered in the same quarter in 2000.

    During the third quarter of 2009 some 6,638 deaths were registered in Ireland, down 0.5 per cent on the same quarter a year earlier.

    For those aged 65 and over, the annual death rate was 40.7 per 1,000 population, as against a rate of 42.4 per 1,000 population for the third quarter of 2008.

    During the three-month period under review, 80 infant deaths were registered giving an infant mortality rate of 4.1 deaths per 1,000 live births.

    The number of neonatal deaths (deaths of infants at ages under 4 weeks) was 53, equivalent to 2.7 deaths per 1,000 live births.

    Over one third of all deaths recorded in the quarter were attributed t0 circulatory disease, while 30 per cent were attributed to malignant neoplasms, 10 per cent to respiratory diseases and 7 per cent to external causes.

    The data indicates there was 126 deaths by suicide during the months of July to September.

    The natural increase in the population (births minus deaths) for the third quarter was 12,651. This represents a rate of 11.3 per 1,000 population, 0.2 more than for the same three-month period a year earlier.

    The estimated population in April 2009 was 4,459,300.

    Deze post is maar ne keer in het Nederlands( of zelfs Vlaams- hoewel ik niet zeker ben dat dit wel politiek correct is!)
    Er blijven nog steeds vele vacatures in Ierland voor mensen die vlot Nederlands/Vlaams praten, en natuurlijk als je ook nog Frans, Duits of eender ander welke taal hebt, dat is natuurlijk ook een pluspunt.
