    #Shoplocal for food and gifts in the #Burrenlowlands

    Hi all,

    Back in March I wrote a very similar post just as we started Lockdown. We are now “almost” halfway our 6 weeks of “Level 5” restrictions, and I thought it was time to update the list of local businesses offering (local) Delivery and Take Away in the #BurrenLowlands. I have also added Kilcolgan and Clarinbridge as they are bordering with the Burren Lowlands 🙂

    As we are now fast approaching Christmas I have also added a list of companies selling gifts you can buy locally via their online stores. Compiling the list made me realize that there are a few new businesses that have started since the first lockdown, so those deserve an extra special shout out! Sadly other businesses did not reopen, hopefully, they will reopen once conditions improve

    Where to shop in the #burrenlowlands ?

    You have probably done some shopping and are preparing to go shopping again soon (if you are lucky enough to have transport). If you prefer to have your shopping/food/gifts delivered, I have made a handy list to help you plan your shopping. Please share it with someone who may not have access to social media and that are looking for information.

    Many businesses in South Galway and North Clare are offering take-away/collection or home delivery services, please always check when you are placing your order, as things can change. Below info is accurate as of the 27th of November.

    Do you remember who shot JR Ewing?

    Hello world,

    Who shot JR Ewing?? I will come to that in a minute. To keep myself sane, and with the fabulous weather ( aren’t we just so lucky), I ,  like everybody else in the country, decided it was high time to give some much-needed love to picket fence. I had started the project two weeks ago, but had to stop, as the pain that I had was not the same colour.

    Luckily the paint shops have re-opened, so more paint was bought with a local paint supplier to continue the mission.The idea was also that the nocturnals teens might join in, so they could earn some pocket money.

    Now you might ask yourself, what is the link between the picket fence and the phrase “ who shot JR Ewing? Who the hell is JR Ewing? Read on to find out:)

    Some of you ( of a certain vintage) will remember the series set in the 80’s called “Dallas”. Dallas was this American prime time television soap opera that was on TV around the world  from April 2, 1978, to May 3, 1991( amazing it ran for 13 years!) The series revolved around a wealthy and feuding Texas family, the Ewings, who own the independent oil company Ewing Oil and the cattle-ranching land of Southfork. 

    My stereotype of Texans was set, they all lived on a huge estate, drank scotch and wore a Stetson( cowboy) hat. I was in Texas many years after and I could not understand why they were not all wearing a Stetson (cowboy) hat! JR Ewing ( also just knows as JR) was the baddy, and eventually, he was killed. As soaps go, we were kept guessing who killed him and eventually we found out…

    When we bought our house 16 years ago, and seeing the long fence on both sides of the house, reminded me a little of the opening scene in Dallas where you saw this (much longer) range fence.

    Now that the fence has been painted ( partially also thanks to the nocturnal teens), I made a little video, adding the tune of the Soap’s tune.

    COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment

    Dear Readers!


    We are now at #day5 since the announcement that schools, universities and childcare facilities are to be closed until March 29th! Since yesterday, also all pubs and bars are closed and mass is celebrated online. Grocery shops, chemists, some Take Aways and some hotels remain open, and people are encouraged to stay indoors and if you do venture out, to practise social distancing.

    Closing pubs and bars means instant job losses for 50 000 people and the shock waves of a slowdown in business has resulted in the Irish Government launching Emergency Social Welfare Payments Covid-19.

    Taking my information from the TD Ciaran Cannon who is regularly posting updates on Facebook, there were a couple of updates about the COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment payment as there were questions if students qualified – so here is the final update as from 16/03 and a page on the Gov. website.

    Who qualifies for the COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment

    The COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment is available to all employees and the self-employed ( including students) who have lost employment due to a downturn in economic activity caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

    How much is the COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment

    It will be paid for a period of 6 weeks at a flat rate payment of €203 per week for jobseekers. It is designed to quickly deliver a social welfare payment to the unemployed and provide income security during this 6-week period. If you are self-employed, please write “Self-Employed, details above” when asked for employer name and address.

    This payment is also available to students ( full time and also part time students) who are working part time assist in their education, and have lost their part time job. They should also complete the same form.

    Do NOT present yourself at an INTREO office

    How do you apply to receive this Emergency Payment?

    There are 2 steps, possibly 5, it will depend on your situation:

    1.Apply for the COVID-19 Unemployment payment downloading this form.

    2.Post it to FREEPOST PO BOX 12896 Dublin 1 – keep checking your bank account as payments may come earlier than normal. You are asked NOT to ring to get a status on your claim due to large amount of applications.

    IF you are out of work due to COVID-19 for LONGER than 6 weeks then..

    3.Apply for Jobseekers Benefit within 6 weeks to ensure you continue to receive a payment (if applicable) after the emergency payment has finished. Once this normal Jobseekers claim is subsequently received, the Department will process these claims and reconcile payments at that time. This will involve backdating increased payments for certain customers

    4.You can apply for Jobseekers support through the online portal http://www.MyWelfare.ie, (you will need a Public Services Card); or if you don’t have a card

    5.Phone 1890 800 024 or 01 2481398 and you be will be sent the relevant application form for the new payment.

    Check out this page on the Gov.ie website with the “How to apply” and the relevant form to download and complete( remember the emergency payment can ONLY be applied for via the form)

    We are now #day3 since the government announced school closures and we are all adjusting to a new reality of washing hands, elbow and foot shaking and social distancing and the odd winking:)

If you prefer to have your shopping delivered ( or really fancy a pizza, as after all, you can’t eat all the loo roll), we have made a handy list to help you plan your shopping. Please share it with someone who may not have access to social media and that are looking for information.

    Many businesses in South Galway and North Clare have offered take-away or in some home delivery services, particularly where people are more isolated. It’s great when a community comes together and help each other!
