    Paypal has announced  150  new jobs in Dublin today and Fidelity in Galway has announced an expansion of 100 jobs, but maybe you really want to start your own business, and if you decide to do it in Kilkenny ( and you win the competition 🙂 ) you are sure to set off with a great start ( and great help!)

    Ireland is far from beaten and despite the recession and negativity there are hundreds of entrepreneurs who have great ideas and who need support to get up and running.
    Businesses successfully established and operating in 11 Patrick Street in Kilkenny have come together to reach out and give back some of their knowledge, experience, and skills to help a new company get up and running in 2011.
    The 11 Patrick Street “GIVING A START” Competition 2011 is aimed at encouraging potential entrepreneurs to follow their dream and to start their own business.
    The judging panel will include Bobby Kerr CEO of Insomnia and of “Dragons Den“, Paula Fitzsimons, of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, and Terry Clune of Taxback.com.
    The winner’s prize is valued at €25,000.

    This prize will be made up as follows:

    . Office, business support, conference and meeting rooms in11 Patrick Street
    . Accommodation and events in the adjoining Pembroke Hotel
    . Support and consultancy from businesses in 11 Patrick Street to the value of €3,000.00 per business.

    How to apply?
    . Complete a Professional Business Plan in the format below to be submitted by 5 p.m. Friday March 4th 2011.

    The ideas will be shortlisted based on their level of innovation, creativity and originality, understanding of commercial realities and overall potential for success. Five entries will be shortlisted on Friday March 25th. Shortlisted applicants will be required to undertake a short presentation on their business idea to the panel of judges. The winner will be deemed by the judges to have the greatest overall potential for long-term success.

    The winner will be announced at a function in The Pembroke Hotel, Kilkenny, on Thursday March 31st.

    MIDLANDS AND WEST ENTERPRISE PROGRAMME
    The 2010 Midlands & West Enterprise Programme (MWEP) will commence in April in the Innovation in Business Centres in Castlebar and Galway.  This is a one-year programme providing entrepreneurs with business skills, networks, facilities and supports necessary to navigate the business start-up process. 
    Applicants should ideally have a number of years industry experience and have the enthusiasm and drive necessary to develop and grow a successful business. Participants may apply to Enterprise Ireland for CORD funding, which could provide up to 50 per cent of previous year’s gross salary.
    The MWEP provides participants with business acumen, concept desk space, mentoring, networking, facilities, and supports necessary to help them in establishing and running their own businesses. 
    Participants should have a business idea with growth and export potential.
    “These new start-up companies will form the foundation for the next generation of Irish enterprises,” said Manager of the IiBC, George McCourt. “We are looking forward to supporting the next generation of innovative start-ups in the region through the new programme.”
    Fifteen high potential entrepreneurs are participating on the current MWEP – products/services being developed include Innovative Medical Devices, Mobile Phone Services, Energy Monitoring, Bibliometrics, Smart Travel Tools, Specialist Financial Portals and Environment Research & Development services.

    “Starting up a business venture can be a daunting prospect.  The MWEP was fantastic in providing a structured approach to the start up process as well as providing advice and mentoring on how to navigate through the early stages.  I would recommend anybody embarking on a startup venture to participate in a programme like this to improve chances of success.”  Colm Rochford, CEO, Powersavvy Limited.

    The MWEP may also be of interest to expatriates who are hoping to return home to set up their own business in the West of Ireland.
