    Today is the 1st of September , and my kids have gone back to school! Don’t they just look adorable!

     

    We had a great time during the summer holidays, we even managed to go camping on InishBofin, it’s becoming a  bit  of a yearly tradition and would highly recommend it.. here is  link to a previous post about InishBofin..
    So I finally came out of my phone contract halfway July, and didn’t waste much time to switch to another company. I was with 3 and was paying a basic monthly charge of 55 Euros. The contract started about a year and a half ago, and gave me unlimited calls, texts and Data AND an I-Phone. At the time it was a pretty good offer, as other providers were charging 99 Euros, so I was getting a good deal..
    Fast forward one and a half years, and the mobile phone scene has changed a lot:)

    Now that I am no longer locked into my contract( and my phone is still working!) I checked out the options.I did talk about this before, check out this post.

    Ok, I’d like that!
    The switch over was fairly easy, had to get my phone unlocked, which took about 48 hours, and then I needed to get a Tesco Sim Card. They are free, and you can order them here.

    With the 15 Euros I have topped up, I can then buy add-ons  buy 1 GB of Data for 5 Euros, 5 GB of data for 5 Euros, and /or unlimited texts for 10 Euros.
    The first month I bought 5 GB of data, as wasn’t sure how much I really needed, and used the 5 remaining Euros for text. Turns out I use just about 1 GB, so the  next month I bought 1 GB and have 10 Euros left for texts.
    They have an app which you can download, and if you are connected to WIFI, you get 200 free national texts, and 50 free international texts. I thought that was really neat, as usually those free texts are only accessible if you log onto their website.. it’s  great that you can now text from the app, essentially for free!

    Net result? My phone bill has gone down from 55 Euros to 15 Euros AND I still have credit.
    So I texted Buzz to 50300 and donated 2 Euros to #Bumbleance  . You’l see I also donated to the #MND

    I was in Galway earlier today, dropping off my mum at the bus station :(, and decided to go for a stroll into Galway City where I did some pre Christmas shopping( Debenhams were having a GREAT sale ) and made my way to Shop Street, where I wandered into Carphonewarehouse.

    There was a huge Lycamobile sign. I have seen Lycamobile in the UK and in other  European countries, but never seen it in Ireland, so I thought I’d inquire about the offerings of their plans.
    Below are the Sim Only pricing, so you’ll need to have an( unlocked) phone for their Sim Card to work in your phone.
    Ordering a SimCard is free and you could pick up a phone for less than 20 Euros at Carphonewarehouse. (why not order one before visiting Ireland)

    This is really a very good offering, so you can have unlimited calls ( Irish mobile and landline)  unlimited texts( Ireland only)  and unlimited data when in Ireland for 29 Euros a month – and it’s on a pay as you go formula, so no long contracts. Internationals calls are extra, but- like Tesco’s – very competitive.

    They have a number for special offers , offering double credit when topping up online, free calls between other international Lyca customers, and a variety of international call rates to landlines for just 1 cent.

    I haven’t really found another provider that offers this.
    Tesco’s offerings are very competitive too, but you’ll still need to choose between having unlimited calls OR unlimited texts and you’ll need a Tesco Clubcard to get the added freebies.(and no unlimited data)

    For anyone who is coming out of their contract, it’s worthwhile to check out your SIM only options, as there are ways to cut your running mobile phone bills..

  • Skype To Go and Tesco Mobile fantastic International rates..

    Hi all,

    I have written a few articles now about making international calls, either via a mobile phone or landline.
    Skype and Googletalk are great, but there are a few limitations…specifically if the area you are in has mobile reception but no 3G ( ie you can’t go online with your phone) or if your phone isn’t a smartphone( after all they are an expensive little toy and you’ll be paying a minimum of 40 Euros a month for having an IPhone..)
    So, how to get around all this?

    As long as you have a Skype account and a little bit of credit, you don’t actually need to have smartphone!

    You just log into your account, and select Skype to go, and add the person’s contact number.
    (I was only able to create 9 )
    One low monthly fee to make unlimited calls to landlines , any time, any day with Skype
    Get an Unlimited Europe calling subscription from Skype – £2.95/month. ( or equivalent in Euros)
    Once you have saved the number, you’ll receive a text from Skype with a local number( you can specify your neareast locality).
    If you have selected a phone plan of your mobile phone provider  with unlimited landline calls, the call will be free from your phone to the Skype out number. Call quality varies, most of the time it’s pretty good, but have also experienced calls with a lot of bankground noise.
    If you have bought a subscription to say France ,and the number you are calling is in France( so you can call France for free) there are no charges.
    If you don’t have a subscription, but  just have Skype credit, there is a connection charge and of course the Skype charges..

    Ok, so that’s great for those who have Skype/credit card…. so for those that don’t have Skype/credit card …………

    I have just discovered that Tesco Mobile( who – as far as I know ) now have the best International rates, and it’s all prepaid, so no contract etc.

    They are having a super offer to call a range of countries( like Australia, UK) at 1 Cent a minute till the end of September.
    So you can buy a tesco phone for under 20 Euros, and you can ring( international landlines) at these super keen rates.
    Tesco Mobile also offers double credit, so if you spend 10 Euros, you get 10 Euros for free ( up to 30 Euros). The free credit gets used first, and is only applicable to local calls and texts, so if you are only calling internationally, the free credit will not be used.


    You can simply order a sim, and as long as your phone is unlocked, you can use it straight away. It might come in handy even if you are visiting Ireland ( and assuming your phone is unlocked).
