  • Train to run again between Athenry and Limerick via Gort

    Hi all,

I heard on the news that they are very close to reopen the Western Rail Corridor!
They were all set to reopen it in January, but due to the bad weather, flooding and frost, it had to be postphoned..
I think it will be a great addition to the public transport system , as it will enable people to commute from the Galway hinterland to Limerick and Ennis.. We drive past the the railway station on a daily basis, and my kids can’t wait to go on the train!

    Here is the official information.:)

Limerick to Galway line: full services commence 30th March 2010 by Corporate Communications
Iarnród Éireann has announced that rail services between Limerick and Galway are set to commence next month.
The €106.5 million new route will be officially launched on 29th March 2010, following the completion of the rebuilding of the Ennis to Athenry line, and the receding of recent flooding between Limerick and Ennis, and full schedules will operate from 30th March.
Major infrastructure works were completed towards the end of last year, and driver training is well underway.
    OVERVIEW OF PROJECT
After a gap of over 30 years since the last scheduled services on the line, the Ennis to Athenry renewal will:
    – Deliver direct Galway to Limerick services, timed to meet commuter needs
    – Serve Limerick, Ennis, Athenry and Galway; and new stations at Sixmilebridge, Gort, Ardrahan, Craughwell
    – Expand commuter links to Limerick and Galway
    – Promote balanced regional development, in line with National Spatial Strategy objectives, by linking two Gateways – Limerick and Galway – and serving the hub of Ennis

The investment project delivered by Iarnród Éireann involves:
    – renewal of 36 miles of track, including all necessary fencing and drainage and installation of points and crossings at Gort and Ennis.
    – a 90m platform with furniture, signage, shelter, Automatic Ticket Vending Machine, lighting, car park, PA, Customer Information Systems, help point and CCTV provision at Sixmilebridge, Gort, Ardrahan and Craughwell. These stations will also be accessible to the mobility impaired
    – At Ennis and Athenry stations, PA, Customer Information Systems, help point and CCTV has been provided
    – Repair and improvement work has been undertaken on bridges on the route to allow rail services to operate
    – modernised signalling systems
    – improvement to level crossings, and elimination where practicable
The service will commence with five services each way daily (Monday to Saturday), and four services each way on Sundays.

  • All Good ideas need a helping hand! ( West of Ireland/Midlands)

    Hello reader,

If you live in the West of Ireland/Midlands and have an innovative business idea but not sure how to take it to the next stage, have a look at this website : http://www.gmit.ie/iibc
I came across this advert in one of my local (free) papers www.galwayindependent.com

    MIDLANDS AND WEST ENTERPRISE PROGRAMME
The 2010 Midlands & West Enterprise Programme (MWEP) will commence in April in the Innovation in Business Centres in Castlebar and Galway.  This is a one-year programme providing entrepreneurs with business skills, networks, facilities and supports necessary to navigate the business start-up process.
Applicants should ideally have a number of years industry experience and have the enthusiasm and drive necessary to develop and grow a successful business. Participants may apply to Enterprise Ireland for CORD funding, which could provide up to 50 per cent of previous year’s gross salary.
The MWEP provides participants with business acumen, concept desk space, mentoring, networking, facilities, and supports necessary to help them in establishing and running their own businesses.
Participants should have a business idea with growth and export potential.
“These new start-up companies will form the foundation for the next generation of Irish enterprises,” said Manager of the IiBC, George McCourt. “We are looking forward to supporting the next generation of innovative start-ups in the region through the new programme.”
Fifteen high potential entrepreneurs are participating on the current MWEP – products/services being developed include Innovative Medical Devices, Mobile Phone Services, Energy Monitoring, Bibliometrics, Smart Travel Tools, Specialist Financial Portals and Environment Research & Development services.

“Starting up a business venture can be a daunting prospect.  The MWEP was fantastic in providing a structured approach to the start up process as well as providing advice and mentoring on how to navigate through the early stages.  I would recommend anybody embarking on a startup venture to participate in a programme like this to improve chances of success.”  Colm Rochford, CEO, Powersavvy Limited.

The MWEP may also be of interest to expatriates who are hoping to return home to set up their own business in the West of Ireland.

  • Children’s related resources in Ireland

    Hello Reader,

Affordable Childcare in Ireland is still very much a hot topic of conversation! There is little or no governmental subsidized full time day care, so when your children are young, you will end up paying a second mortgage untill they start Junior Infants..Ouch!
Ok, they have introduced one year of subsidized sessional care, known as the ECCE scheme, but reality is that’s still only a few hours, which means if you are working full time, you will have to pay to have your children minded after their sessional care.
Children can start Junior Infants from the age of 4, however this is a much debated age, as most parents only tend to send their children at the age of 5. Education is  compulsory as from the age of 6.
You may find this link interesting about The Irish Educational System, primary Education.
Initially I thought this was really late, as in Belgium for example children would start kindergarten at the age of 2.5, but the Irish School system is very different as the closest we have here would be paid sessional care from the age of 3 , probably best known as Montessori. The Irish version of Kindergarten is called Junior Infants and Senior Infants, and only starts from the age of 4.
Even when the kids are at school, there isn’t such a thing as free pre school ( ie before school starts in the morning) or free afterschool ( when school has finished at 2/3/4) so also here you have to pay( which tends to work out at around 15/20 Euros a day per child) if you are not around to pick up your child.
Click here to get a list of http://www.hse.ie/ approved creches/pre schools by County. Those marked as community will have subsidized sessional childcare, which will be cheaper than privately operated creches, but have to compliant with all the rules and regulations related to childcare( there are many !)
Contacting your local Childcare Committee will give a good idea what services are available in your area.
In my case I worked full time, had our first son, and then returned to work 4 days a week, and my monthly childcare bill would have been around 500 Euros a month which is not tax deductible(  Minimum 30 Euros a day). Once our second son was born, childcare for the 2 , 4 days a week was around 900 Euros( 10% discount for second child). I started my business shortly after the birth of my second son.
These prices are conservative, as I live in Galway which has a lot more rural creches where overheads will be lower than in Dublin, so you can add 20% for Dublin rates… ( hope you are not crying yet).
Once there are more than 3 children, the charges become astronomical and employing a nanny/housekeeper/au pair will work out cheaper.
I hope this has given you some food for thought!
