Things to do in Belfast – worth a trip!
Dear Readers,
If you haven’t been to Belfast in a while, I would recommend you take a trip!
It all starts off as you drive into Belfast, where you can see a huge sculpture called the Rise.
Rise is a 38m high new spherical sculpture designed by Nottingham-based artist Wolfgang Buttress, currently being installed at the end of Belfast’s M1 motorway, above the city’s gateway Broadway roundabout where it hits the Falls Road. The £500,000 duplex galvanised steel commission, consisting of one sphere set inside another, was won in a competition in 2008 and symbolises, according to the artist, “a new chapter in the history of Belfast”. ( It’s already been affectionately renamed “The Balls on the Falls”.)We decided to visit whowhatwherewhyhwen museum I would highly recommend it!Here are the instructions on how to get there .It’s a huge museum over several floors, dedicated to technology and science. Just about every topic is covered, and is a great place for kids to try things like flying an airplane, steering a (motor)boat, build an engine, understand gravity, make a film, learn about inventors, the list is endless. (Just one thing, if you are from Southern Ireland, they don’t accept Laser card, so it’s cash or Visa Card).There is a Costa Coffee bar, but you can also bring your own lunch, which I thought was a great idea. (Saying that the children’s menu Chicken Nuggets and a drink for £1.99 really was a good deal)It got pretty busy, so I would advise to go early!Here is a link to the opening hours and admission charges.If we were living a little closer, I’d consider holding a birthday party there for the boys!There is also floor dedicated to the building of Titantic, as it was built in Belfast.It will be 100 years next year ( 2012) that Titanic sank and lot’s of preparations are on the way to commemorate the event.This is the way the building will look when finished.
A new building is currently pushing its way towards the sky in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter. Drive over the Lagan Bridge or along the historic Queen’s Road in the heart of the former shipyard and you will see a stunning piece of architecture coming to life.The building is clad in metal shards and when the light plays on them it looks like the movement of water. From above, the building resembles a white star, the symbol of Titanic’s operators. When finished, the visitor attraction will be surrounded by public realm, including reflecting pools and a trail which will take the visitor on a journey through Belfast’s industrial past.After all that, it was time for a bit of retail therapy! There is a new shopping centre in Belfast called Victoria Square Shopping Centre ( I suppose it’s a bit like the Dundrum Shopping Centre of Northern Ireland)
As we walked over a Pedestrian bridge in Belfast, I saw a banner from the Lagan Boat Company with their company sloagn that said ” She was alright when she left here “, referring to the Titanic, leaving Belfast harbour in perfect condition on the 2nd of April 1912 and unfortunately sinking on the 15th of April, just three hours after hitting an iceberg.

Skype To Go and Tesco Mobile fantastic International rates..
Hi all,
I have written a few articles now about making international calls, either via a mobile phone or landline.Skype and Googletalk are great, but there are a few limitations…specifically if the area you are in has mobile reception but no 3G ( ie you can’t go online with your phone) or if your phone isn’t a smartphone( after all they are an expensive little toy and you’ll be paying a minimum of 40 Euros a month for having an IPhone..)
So, how to get around all this?As long as you have a Skype account and a little bit of credit, you don’t actually need to have smartphone!
You just log into your account, and select Skype to go, and add the person’s contact number.(I was only able to create 9 )One low monthly fee to make unlimited calls to landlines , any time, any day with Skype
Get an Unlimited Europe calling subscription from Skype – £2.95/month. ( or equivalent in Euros)
Once you have saved the number, you’ll receive a text from Skype with a local number( you can specify your neareast locality).If you have selected a phone plan of your mobile phone provider with unlimited landline calls, the call will be free from your phone to the Skype out number. Call quality varies, most of the time it’s pretty good, but have also experienced calls with a lot of bankground noise.If you have bought a subscription to say France ,and the number you are calling is in France( so you can call France for free) there are no charges.If you don’t have a subscription, but just have Skype credit, there is a connection charge and of course the Skype charges..
Ok, so that’s great for those who have Skype/credit card…. so for those that don’t have Skype/credit card …………
I have just discovered that Tesco Mobile( who – as far as I know ) now have the best International rates, and it’s all prepaid, so no contract etc.
They are having a super offer to call a range of countries( like Australia, UK) at 1 Cent a minute till the end of September.So you can buy a tesco phone for under 20 Euros, and you can ring( international landlines) at these super keen rates.Tesco Mobile also offers double credit, so if you spend 10 Euros, you get 10 Euros for free ( up to 30 Euros). The free credit gets used first, and is only applicable to local calls and texts, so if you are only calling internationally, the free credit will not be used.
You can simply order a sim, and as long as your phone is unlocked, you can use it straight away. It might come in handy even if you are visiting Ireland ( and assuming your phone is unlocked).Katleen -

Visit Bunratty and get 2 for the price of 1!

Are you planning a weekend with the family, having a weekend getaway or just an enthusiast for culture? If so, then Bunratty Castle and Folk Park should be high up on your current priorities. Even if you’re staying in the nearby Hotels Galway or Hotels Limerick, this attraction makes the perfect day.
The heritage of the castle is steeped in a rich history dating all the way back to Viking settlers in 970 who used the castle as a trading camp but has seen the influence of many as four castles have been built on the site the current castle stands. The castle is beautifully decorated, especially in the Earl’s Bedroom where you will find furniture of exquisite quality and incredible art pieces such as a French portrait of Mary Queen of Scots. The Great Hall houses wonderful tapestries from all over Europe dating back to the 16th century that are truly delightful to see the intricate work that went in to them and how well preserved they are. The massive room, at 48 feet tall, is full of magnificent antiques including antlers of the Giant Irish Elk which had been recovered in the area, thought to have been around 12,000 years before man. The entire castle feeds your imagination as you can depict everything that might have gone on within the walls, great for introducing the kids to the country’s history.
Alongside the castle is the Bunratty Folk Park, a faithful recreation of 19th century Ireland. Here, you can take a step back in to history in an interactive village where you are encouraged to talk and get involved with the actors that roam the site in costume to get a deeper understanding of what life was like back then. A School, Doctor’s House, Pawnbrokers, Drapery, Printworks, Grocery, Hardware Shop, Pottery, Post Office and even a fully licensed Pub where you can pop in for a drink are among the buildings you can explore along Village Street. Elsewhere in the park, there are original buildings such as Ardcroney Church (an original Church of Ireland building moved to the park in 1998), Hazelbrook House (the home of HB ice cream’s Hughes brothers) and Vertical Mill (a corn mill based on mills used 1000 years ago). See if you and the family would be able to tough it out in a time without modern technology by going back to a simpler time.
The entire experience is an educational yet exciting day out which can bring together the whole family. The admissions to the castle are from 9.00 till 16.00 all year round. From June to August, the Folk Park admissions are from 9.00 to 16.15 Monday to Friday and 9.00 to 17.15 Saturday & Sunday, the rest of the year admissions are 9.00-16.15. Gettings Schoolbooks in Ireland for the kids…

I am pasting parts of a previous post from last year and adding some new bits, as thing haven’t changed that much!
It’s that time of the year ( sort of halfway the holidays) when you start to see and hear adverts for the back to school stuff…I have yet to get some books for my oldest son, as he’s going to First Class and our youngest son is starting Junior Infants, so more books to get!
..so what are your options….
Probably best known is an Irish On-Line Company called http://www.schoolbooks.ie/ – got Ruebens book there once.. They can also cover the books at an extra charge. Delivery is 6 Euros, very efficient.
As I was doing some research on their website, I found out that they have teamed up with Supervalu.
