    Hi all,

    There is one particular site which is not on the below list, which is called DAFT , which stands for Dublin Accommodation Finder Terminal – it used to be solely restricted to Dublin properties, but  has long since been rolled out nationally and is a great place to get an idea on pricing and availability.
    Many of the below agents will push their properties to rent(let) or buy to Daft as well.
    If it’s West you are thinking of heading, I’d recommend you check a local free paper that comes out every Thursday which is called the Advertiser. 
    To get more info on moving to the West of Ireland, please check out this website 
    The main paper  is the Galway Advertiser classified property section, but there is also an Advertiser in 
    I remember when we moved from Dublin to Galway, we found our house via the Advertiser:)

    Those of you on facebook, I have set up a facebook group for my blog!
    You can find it here! Please come and see hello!

    I was following these posts about how Europeans were trying to identify the various states in the USA and Americans trying to identify countries in Europe, and it turns out we are all struggling to get them right!

    I then thought, let ‘s see how many of you can identify all the Irish counties correctly.

    I found this online tool called Marqueed, that allows you to collaborate, so I dare you, there is 32 of them, so the more people partcipate, the better. I have marked Cork( Ok that was easy)

    Now that Halloween has long been forgotten, Christmas is next on the shopping list.
    I love shopping, but as there aren’t really many shops near me, I look on-line, the choice is endless:)
    One of the challenges of living in Ireland, is to get cheap/free delivery ,especially from the UK.
    If you shop on Amazon or Ebay, very often the seller offers free shipping to the UK, but deliveries to Ireland
    will cost a small fortune… but I am glad to say, Parcelmotel.com offers a great solution.

    I  placed an order on Amazon UK yesterday, and  the shipping charges were going to be 12 Pounds.
    I signed up for parcelmotel.com – who are based in Newtonabbey in Northern Ireland .
    They  provide
    you with their address and a PM reference, which you need to use for your delivery address.
    As Northern Ireland is part of the UK, it’s considered a UK address, so the shipping charges changed to
    5 Pounds.  It could have been free if the products were being shipped by Amazon, in this case it was a third party, so the free shipping does not apply( It only applies if it shipped by Amazon directly)
    They have a few places around Ireland( nearest for me is Galway or Ennis), where I can go and pick up my parcel. I’l receive a text once the parcel has arrived.The cost is only 3.5 Euro per parcel, so it’s a great deal! 
    Talking about Amazon – there is thing called Black Friday ,  Black Friday Deals on Amazon they are like daily deals, but  only available for a few days.
    Shop on Ebay there are some great deals to be gotten.
    Shopping is great, and it’s even more exciting that some companies will pay you a % if you shop via them.
    The best known in Ireland is called Fatcheese.

    Hello Readers,
    So this year we headed to the Galway Science fair again, and the kids loved it.
    I wrote an article about it last year too and by and large, the main hall had the same familiar companies that were exhibiting the latest in science and technology. We entered our names in a few of the competitions, and got lucky, as Alex won a speaking microscope (thanks to Medtronic )
    There was a new hospital ward section which showed the basics of CPR, bloodpressure. It was good to see that this was added as it brings it all much closer to real life. The kids enjoyed doing CPR to a dummy!(see picture)
    As we arrived early this year( just past 10 o’clock) it wasn’t that busy yet, we spent some time looking at various projects of  participating schools, which was great. There were lot’s of schools who were displaying their projects, so I’ll just cover a few that I that got talking to( or the ones I found interesting!!)
    Scoilroisdominicanns – Dominican School showed me their projects, one of them measuring water quality/polution by measuring the heartbeart of mussels ( see picture). A device was strapped to mussel that measured the heartbeat of the mussel and the opening of closing of its shell.
    They had another project where instructions were written down to draw a squirrel versus watching a video on how to draw a squirrel. They then showed the results of the  pupils that drew a squirrel based on written instructions versus those that watched the video tutorial, and it was clear that those who watched the video tutorial produced a better looking squirrel than those that drew it based on written instructions.
    Safreeze: Helping consumers identify whether their frozen food is safe to consume or not. Safreeze is a dual-coloured ice cube that will form a single colour if frozen food is defrosted and refrozen. Therefore it will be clear to the consumer that the food is unsafe to  consume.
    The last school – Milltown National School –  showed me their Digital Heritage Archive Project of Milltown. The pupils got together with the community to document historic pictures and objects, and uploaded them onto Flickr.   They won first prize in the Digital project last year.

    Another interesting stand was the 091labs.com – 091 Labs is a collaborative community space based in Galway City,
    Ireland. It is a shared physical space for any and all creative
    projects: art, woodwork, software, photography and electronics and
    related activities. 
    There was also Ignite: which is a global
    lightning presentation format where speakers have five minutes and
    twenty timed slides to enlighten and inspire the audience about their
    chosen topic. Entry is €5 and the enlightenment is free!

    We left around 2 o’clock when there was a sea of people, and decided to go for some food at the Bodkin Roundabout at the Tesco shopping centre.
    For those who haven’t been to Galway City in a while, be aware!! There has been a major transformation of the once “magic”roundabout. Galway has lot’s of roundabouts, and this  one was particularly difficult to navigate.
    The new roundabout has lights, a lot more lanes, so if you are not sure what lane to choose, check out this image.

  • Ryanair to add new routes from Dublin and Shannon

    Hi all,

    I am always excited when there are airlines adding new routes, especially if it’s out of Shannon, which is on the West Coast, as although it’s (only) a 2.5 hours drive to Dublin, it’s only a 45 minutes drive to Shannon for us, so I much prefer to drive to Shannon, rather  than Dublin.

    There were two announcements recently : new routes out of Dublin :
    The new routes are to Almeria, Bari, Basel, Bucharest, Chania, Comiso, Lisbon, Marrakesh and Prague. They bring the airline’s total routes from Dublin to 85 and will start from next April.

    The services will fly between Shannon and Berlin, Paris, Warsaw, Nice, Fuerteventura, Krakow, Faro and Munich.

    This is really a very good offering, so you can have unlimited calls ( Irish mobile and landline)  unlimited texts( Ireland only)  and unlimited data when in Ireland for 29 Euros a month – and it’s on a pay as you go formula, so no long contracts. Internationals calls are extra, but- like Tesco’s – very competitive.

    They have a number for special offers , offering double credit when topping up online, free calls between other international Lyca customers, and a variety of international call rates to landlines for just 1 cent.

    I haven’t really found another provider that offers this.
    Tesco’s offerings are very competitive too, but you’ll still need to choose between having unlimited calls OR unlimited texts and you’ll need a Tesco Clubcard to get the added freebies.(and no unlimited data)
